In America, June is a very busy month. Many people have school graduations in May or June, and June is the beginning of the summer “baby season“. But June is most famous for LGBT Pride Month, weddings, Juneteenth, and Father’s Day.

LGBT Pride

LGBT Pride Month is June because of the Stonewall riots of June 28, 1969.

In 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, NYC. They had raided this bar many times, claiming to search for drugs and illegal behavior, but the people at the bar knew that it was harassment and discrimination. (The police raided bars with LGBT customers very often, unlike other bars.) On June 28th, 1969, the people at the bar grew frustrated. When the police came, they locked the police in the bar and refused to let them leave. When other police arrived, people in the neighborhood attacked the police van. The protest lasted for more than a day.

In 1970, people started to have street parades on the anniversary of the Stonewall riots. Now, the month of June is dedicated to LGBT pride and anti-discrimination in the community.

Weddings

There are various explanations for June being the most common month for weddings in North America, but the good weather, variety of flowers, and bright evenings are certainly helpful.

In 2005, same-sex marriage became legal in Canada. It became legal in New Zealand in 2013, the UK in 2014, and the USA and Ireland in 2015. It became legal in Australia in 2017. Now, same-sex couples are able to celebrate their pride and their joy in the same month.

Juneteenth (June 19th)

Juneteenth is a very important day for many Americans. It is a celebration of June 19th, 1865, when news of the American Civil War’s results reached Texas and the last African-American slaves in former Confederate territory learned that they were freed. Many people celebrate the holiday with a party or a picnic. Red foods are popular at Juneteenth celebrations, to remember the blood of enslaved ancestors.

Father’s Day (Third Sunday in June)

In America, Father’s Day is the third Sunday in June, just as Mother’s Day is the second Sunday in May. Similar to Mother’s Day, the parent of honor receives gifts, cards, and special affection from their family. The family often goes out to a restaurant for breakfast or lunch, or they may have a relaxing and fun day at home. Young children usually make gifts for their parents, and adult children may call their fathers or come to visit them.
